Tea towels, jar labels and pantry signs

Kitchen projects fall into two kinds. Fabric pieces, such as tea towels and aprons, take heat-transfer vinyl at 100 to 150 mm; mirror the design before you cut. Hard surfaces, such as jars, canisters and cutting boards, take permanent vinyl or engraving, usually smaller, at 50 to 80 mm.

For jars and canisters, the designs with a blank panel are made to carry a word such as the contents. For a glass cutting board, apply vinyl to the underside in mirror image so the knife never touches it.

Questions

Is vinyl on a mug dishwasher safe?

Permanent vinyl survives hand washing well and dishwashers poorly. Let it cure for two to three days before the first wash.

Can I engrave these on a wooden board?

Yes. Import the SVG into laser software and set the shape to fill. Bold silhouettes engrave most clearly on wood grain.
