Nine kinds of fruit, each a set of its own: pineapples, apples, lemons, strawberries, watermelon, peaches, cherries, bananas and avocados. Most sets show the fruit whole and cut open, as a solid shape, as an outline and in layers of its real colours. This page shows ten from every set.

Slices, halves and wedges

Cut fruit is more interesting than whole fruit, and the sets have plenty. The lemon comes as a round slice with eight segments cut out as windows, a half slice, a wedge and a lemon cut lengthwise. There is a strawberry cut in half, a peach half with its stone, an avocado half, an apple half with seeds and an apple core.

The lemon slice is the fine one: its membranes are thin spokes, so cut it 80 mm or more. For a row of slices along a kitchen shelf or a tea towel hem, the half slice and the wedge are sturdier and can go smaller.

Fruit that holds a name

Seven of the nine have a split version with a gap across the middle for a name: pineapple, apple, lemon, strawberry, watermelon, peach and avocado. All nine have a monogram version with room for an initial. On a tumbler, 70 to 80 mm wide; on a tote bag, 200 mm.

The apple with a name banner and the teacher apple on books are the ones for the end of term. The hollow pineapple takes two or three initials.

Lemonade stands and summer parties

The lemon set has a glass of lemonade and lemons on a branch for a stall sign. The watermelon set has a slice on a lolly stick, the way it is served at a summer party, and a slice with a bite taken out. A chocolate-dipped strawberry suits a Valentine card at 60 mm.

Questions

Is an avocado a fruit?

Yes. Botanically it is a berry with a single large seed, so it is here, with an avocado toast and a bowl of guacamole for those who think of it as lunch.

Which fruit are not here yet?

Oranges, grapes, pears and blueberries have no set of their own so far.

How many colours do the layered versions need?

Three for the pineapple, lemon, strawberry, cherries and banana, four for the watermelon slice and the peach, and five for the avocado.
