Why each state is drawn on its own

A map of the whole country stretches and tilts the states near its edges: Maine leans, Washington looks squat. Here each state is projected on its own, centred on itself, so it has the proportions people who live there know from their road map. That is the shape you want on a sign or a shirt.

The borders are the US Census Bureau’s cartographic boundaries, which are public domain. They are simplified only as far as cutting needs: specks of islands are left out and inlets too narrow to cut are closed. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, so two states are not to the same scale as each other.

What people make

A home-state sign with a heart over the town; a split state with the family name; an ornament or coaster with the state cut out of a disc; a decal for the car window. For a heart over your own town, add a small heart in your cutting software where the town is and cut it out of the silhouette.

Questions

Where are Rhode Island and Delaware?

Held back. They are so small that the boundary file used here draws their coasts in a few coarse steps, and the result did not look like them.

Are the states to scale with each other?

No. Each is 100 mm on its longer side. To show two together at true scale, use a map of the country instead.
