Each job has its own kit

The sets are drawn job by job, with the tools that job would recognise. The rad tech set has a chest X-ray, a C-arm and a lead apron with a thyroid collar. Phlebotomy has a butterfly needle and a rack of four tubes. The respiratory therapist has lungs with airways, a ventilator and an inhaler. The sonographer has a probe with a gel bottle and a scan print with a blank margin.

Most sets also have a figure at work, a plain silhouette, a heart, a monogram frame and a layered version, so a gift for a pharmacist can be made the same way as one for a dentist.

Badge reels, lanyards and tumblers

A badge reel gives you about 30 mm, which is very little. Use a single bold shape, such as the nurse cap with a cross, or Nurse Life in block capitals, whose strokes stay thick when small. Seal vinyl on a reel with a clear dome sticker, because it is handled all day.

On a tumbler there is room for 80 mm. The nurse monogram frame is a ring with the cap on top and space for one to three initials. The stethoscope for a name has a long level stretch of tube for the name to sit on.

Heartbeat lines

The plain heartbeat is a monitor trace with a tall beat between two smaller ones, in a line about 3 mm wide and 100 mm long. Stretch it to 250 mm across a shirt front or wrap it round a mug. Other versions run into a heart, cross a stethoscope or carry a cross, and several job sets have a heartbeat of their own with the tools of the trade in the line.

Questions

Is the EMT star the official emblem?

No. It is a plain six-point star with a heartbeat across it. The registered emblem with the staff and snake is not used anywhere in the library.

Which design suits a newly qualified nurse?

The stethoscope for a name with the new title after it, or the nurse cap above the year. The graduation page has caps and laurels to go with either.

Are there sets for jobs outside the hospital?

Yes. The jobs page has firefighters, linemen, welders, librarians and many more.

What is on the dentist’s and the tooth sets?

The dentist set has the chair, the drill, tools in a cassette and an X-ray film with three teeth. The tooth set is the tooth itself: with a shine, with braces, with a toothbrush and with wings for the tooth fairy.
