The ribbon, and which version to cut

The plain awareness ribbon is one solid piece with two short cut lines at the crossing, so it works in a single colour of vinyl and stays whole when cut small. The pink version is two layers, a light pink base and a deeper pink for the back of the loop, which gives the fold depth without any fine cutting.

The ribbon made of hearts is twenty loose hearts, so move it with transfer tape. The butterfly ribbon has open-celled wings and wants 90 mm or more. For a cap or a sleeve, where the design is 40 to 50 mm, use the plain or the slim ribbon.

Shirts for a walk or a treatment day

A team shirt for a charity walk usually carries the ribbon, a short phrase and a name. Breast Cancer Survivor and Fight Like a Girl sit well at 220 to 240 mm wide on the chest, and I Wear Pink for My Sister is the supporter’s line at the same width. The boxing gloves with a pink ribbon are three layers: the ribbon, the gloves and their darker lines, pressed in that order.

For someone in treatment, softer things are kinder than shirts: a chemo bag with My God Is Bigger Than Cancer at about 205 mm wide, or a blanket with Hope and the ribbon in place of the o. Heat-transfer vinyl on fleece needs a lower temperature and a pressing cloth.

Questions

What pink is the awareness ribbon?

There is no single official shade. A light, clear pink is the usual choice. The files carry no colour of their own apart from the layered versions, so cut them from whichever pink you have.

Can I use the ribbon for another cause?

Yes. The plain, outline, slim and stitched ribbons are the same looped shape that every awareness colour uses, and the two-colour ribbon is made for causes with a pair of colours.

Can I sell shirts made with these to raise money?

Yes. Things you make with the files may be sold or given away in any number. What stays with you is the files: they are not for passing on. The licence is short and says so.
