How the faces are drawn

Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, and the style has firm habits: a simple rounded shape, two round eyes set wide apart, a small smile between them and a blush on each cheek. The lemon here stands on end with a leaf like a quiff. The donut has its eyes and smile below the hole and sprinkles above. The fried egg wears its face on the yolk.

In these files the eyes, smile and cheeks are cut out of the solid shape, so whatever is behind shows through as their colour. On white card they come out white. For pink cheeks, stick a scrap of pink behind the cheek holes before mounting the piece.

Stickers, planners and lunch boxes

A face is the smallest detail in each of these, so size sets what is possible. For vinyl stickers of 50 mm, the size table on the design’s page shows how thin the smile gets at 2 inches. For planner stickers of 25 mm and under, print the PNG and cut round the outside instead, which keeps every eye and smile however small.

For a lunch box, permanent vinyl at 60 mm, one piece of fruit for each day of the week. For a reward chart, the light bulb, the tooth and the pencil at 40 mm in bright card.

Questions

Are these characters from a Japanese brand?

No. They are our own drawings in the general kawaii manner. No named character is copied.

Can I colour them in?

Yes. Print the PNG, which has a clear background, and colour by hand, or cut the shape from coloured vinyl and back the face holes with another colour.

Where are the cute animals?

On the cute page, which has the baby and sleeping version of each animal.
