Matching gifts for two friends

Most friendship makes come as a pair: two mugs, two keyrings, two shirts. Best Friends is set on two lines in its stacked versions, so you can ungroup the file and put “Best” on one item and “Friends” on the other. Bestie is a single word; cut it twice in two colours, 200 mm wide for a shirt or 60 mm for a compact mirror.

The puzzle piece set has two pieces that fit together and a keyring piece with a hole already in it. Cut the pair from 3 mm acrylic or plywood at 50 to 60 mm each, one for each friend. The heart puzzle in five pieces does the same job for a larger group.

Shirts for a group trip or a sleepover

Birthday Squad, Birthday Crew, Cousin Crew and Slumber Party Squad are cut many times over, usually in several sizes: about 240 mm wide for adults, 170 to 180 mm for children and 130 mm for toddlers. The bold version of each has the least to weed, which matters when there are a dozen to make.

Cut one on scrap vinyl first and hold it against the smallest shirt. Lettering that looks right on an adult medium can run into the armholes of a child’s size 4.

For a friend who lives far away

Miles Apart Close at Heart is the usual wording over two maps. Take the outline of each friend’s state or country from the map files, add a small heart where each town is, and set the words between them. On a framed print 200 mm wide, each map can be 70 mm and the words 90 mm.

Questions

Are these from the television comedy of the same name?

No. They are plain words about friendship in our own lettering. Nothing here uses a show’s title, logo or typeface.

How do I split Best Friends across two mugs?

Open one of the stacked versions, ungroup it and move each line to its own mug. Keep both lines at the same scale so the letters match: about 80 mm wide suits a standard mug.

Which picture goes beside Bestie?

The heart hands or the fist bump from the hands set, scaled to the height of the capital B and placed after the word or under it.

Is there something for three friends, not two?

The squad and crew words suit any number. For a keepsake, cut the heart puzzle in five pieces from thin wood and give each friend a piece.
