Things from an older world, drawn as clean cut files: skeleton keys, a pocket watch and a grandfather clock, a twin lens camera, a typewriter, a dial telephone, steam trains, an antique car and a penny-farthing, with scroll flourishes to frame them and distress textures to wear them down.

Making a new cut look old

The distressed set is what turns any clean design into a worn one. The distress overlay is a field of chips and scratches, heavy in some patches and almost clear in others. Lay it over a design in your cutting software, select both and subtract, and the chips are knocked out of the design. The speckle texture is gentler and reads as worn ink.

Distressing leaves hundreds of specks to weed, so it suits printing and sublimation better than vinyl. In vinyl, use the light texture on a design 250 mm or wider and weed with a strip of tape, not a hook.

Keys, clocks and cameras

The skeleton key has a clover bow of three open rings, a stem with three collars and a bit of three teeth. Cut it from 3 mm plywood at 90 mm and thread a ribbon through a ring. The clock set has a pocket watch on a chain, a grandfather clock and a cuckoo clock; the camera set a twin lens camera and an old camera on a tripod.

On a card front these sit at 60 to 80 mm. On a frame for a wedding or a christening, pair a key with a date and a name.

Flourishes, frames and a birthday

The swash flourish is one sweep of the pen, made to underline a name. The flourish frame is a double scroll above and its mirror image below, two separate pieces with space between for a name or a date. The art deco frame has stepped corners.

Vintage Aged to Perfection is the milestone birthday saying: 70 mm wide on a tankard, about 240 mm on a shirt, with the birth year added underneath in your own numerals.

Questions

How do I knock a texture out of a design?

Place the texture over the design, select both and use Subtract or Slice in your cutting software, then delete the leftover texture. In laser software, a boolean difference does the same.

Is there an old pickup truck?

Three: a vintage pickup, an old farm truck with stake sides and a vintage truck carrying a Christmas tree.

Are there old advertisements or labels?

No, because those carry brand names. The frames, borders and flourishes here are the parts to build a label of your own from.

What about the sixties and seventies?

Flower power is in the hippie set and the peace sign set. This page leans older, with a few retro machines from the eighties.
