The little round trailer
Most camper files are the small round trailer of the 1950s, nicknamed the canned ham for its shape. Eight of the designs here are that trailer, drawn once and dressed differently, so a campsite sign, a set of cups and a Christmas card can all match. Its window has an upright bar about 2 mm wide when the trailer is 100 mm long, and the door is cut round three sides and left joined along the bottom, so it does not fall out.
The hitch, the jack and the gas bottle at the front are the thinnest parts: the jack leg is a little under 3 mm wide at 100 mm. In vinyl that is fine down to about 70 mm long. For wood, cut the trailer at 150 mm or more, or use the camper silhouette or the camper monogram frame, which have fewer small openings.
Pitch signs and names
Campers are personalised more than almost anything else: a family name, a pitch number, the year the trailer was bought. The camper monogram frame has a round opening for an initial or a number. The bigger rigs, the travel trailer, the fifth wheel and the motorhome, have a long plain wall under the windows where a name fits in a single line.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which camper matches mine?
Pick by type. A small trailer on one axle is the vintage camper or the retro aluminium camper. A long trailer on two axles is the travel trailer. If the front hangs over the bed of a pickup it is the fifth wheel, and if it has an engine it is the RV motorhome or the camper van.
Can I cut the happy camper in more than one colour?
Yes. Cut the whole file once in the trailer colour, then cut it again in a second colour and keep only the parts you want from it, such as the flamingo in pink or the bunting in red. Lay those pieces over the first cut.
Will the bunting and the flamingo survive at a small size?
The bunting line and the flamingo’s legs are about 2 mm thick when the file is 100 mm wide. That works in vinyl and card from 100 mm upwards. Below that, use the vintage camper trailer without the extras.
