Homecoming signs and send-off shirts

A sign held up at an airport or a parade ground has to be read from a distance. The words go 450 to 500 mm wide on a sheet of foam board or corrugated plastic, in the bold or slab version. Army Mom, Marine Mom and Air Force Mom are all sized that way for graduation day, homecoming and send-off signs.

For what is worn and carried: Army Wife at 200 mm on a shirt and 130 mm on a car window, Navy Mom at 240 mm on a sweatshirt and 75 mm on a mug, Marine Mom at 90 mm on a cap.

Camouflage in layers, or through a stencil

The woodland camo is four layers to stack: khaki, green, brown and black, in round-lobed shapes. The layers overlap, so small errors in lining them up never show. Desert, tiger stripe and digital camo each come in three layers, and there is a camo heart and a camo star for a shirt pocket.

To paint camouflage on a box or a sign, use the camo stencil panel. It is one piece with bridges at least 3 mm wide: sponge through it, move it along and overlap in a second colour.

A flag in one colour

The one-colour American flag keeps only the dark parts, for a single colour of vinyl on a shirt or a truck window: the union with its fifty stars cut out, joined to the short stripes, and the long stripes as separate bars. Use transfer tape to keep the bars spaced. The layered flag is the full red, white and blue to official proportions.

Are the emblems of the services here?

No. The seals and emblems of the armed forces are protected marks that need a licence from each service. The pieces here are generic: a flag, an eagle, an anchor, a helicopter.

Which aircraft and vessels are drawn?

An army helicopter with a stepped cockpit, a twin rotor transport helicopter, a fighter jet seen from above and several submarines. They are generic types, not particular models.

Is there wording for other family members or branches?

So far the mums of four services, the army wife and the military wife. For a dad, a sister or another branch, set your own words in the typeface named on a design’s page so that they match.
