Bedroom walls, shirts and party pieces

Space is a favourite for children’s rooms and birthday parties. For a wall, cut removable vinyl and scatter planets and stars at mixed sizes, 50 to 200 mm, with one large rocket as the centrepiece. For a party, the rockets and astronauts cut from card make cupcake toppers at 50 mm; pick designs whose narrowest part is still 1 mm or more at that size, which each design’s page shows.

The planets with rings are the delicate ones: the ring is a thin band where it passes in front of the planet. Cut those at 80 mm or more. The globes show the Earth with stylised continents, recognisable but not exact enough to navigate by.

Questions

Are the planets the real ones?

They are drawn after the real ones: a ringed planet like Saturn, a banded giant like Jupiter, a cratered one like Mars. They are simplified for cutting, not scientific diagrams.

Do the rockets copy a real spacecraft?

Most are generic toy-style rockets. A few follow the general shape of a Moon rocket or a shuttle, with no markings or logos.
