Free zodiac SVG files

Free zodiac SVG files: the wheel of twelve signs as a cut plate and as a line drawing, a sun and moon in a ring of glyphs, and the twelve glyphs and twelve constellations set out on one sheet. Every glyph is drawn by code with one round pen, so the twelve match.

The twelve signs and their dates

The zodiac is the band of sky that the Sun appears to cross in a year, divided into twelve signs of 30 degrees each. By the usual tropical dates they run: Aries, 21 March to 19 April; Taurus, 20 April to 20 May; Gemini, 21 May to 20 June; Cancer, 21 June to 22 July; Leo, 23 July to 22 August; Virgo, 23 August to 22 September; Libra, 23 September to 22 October; Scorpio, 23 October to 21 November; Sagittarius, 22 November to 21 December; Capricorn, 22 December to 19 January; Aquarius, 20 January to 18 February; and Pisces, 19 February to 20 March. The first and last day of a sign can move by one from year to year.

Each sign has its own set here with its figure, such as the ram for Aries or the scales for Libra, and its constellation at full size. The grids on this page are for when you want all twelve at once.

Cutting the wheel and the grids

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side, and at that size a glyph on the wheel is only about 14 mm across with cuts under 2 mm wide. That is fine for a pen plotter or a print, but for vinyl, card or wood enlarge the wheel to 200 mm or more so the small islands inside Taurus, Cancer and Leo have bridges you can weed around. The wheel plate, the ring frame and the sun and moon are each one piece. The glyph grid, the ring charms, the constellations and the elements are loose pieces meant to be ungrouped and used singly.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which way round does the zodiac wheel go?

On these wheels Aries begins at the nine o’clock point and the signs follow anticlockwise: Taurus next below it, then round so that Cancer begins at the bottom, Libra at three o’clock and Capricorn at the top. That is how an astrological chart is usually drawn. Mirror the file if you want the signs to run clockwise.

Are the constellations the same as the signs?

They share names but not places. The signs are twelve equal slices of the sky measured from the March equinox, while the constellations are star patterns of very different sizes, and over about two thousand years the slow wobble of the Earth’s axis has moved the signs roughly one constellation along. The sheet here shows the star patterns.

Can I use one glyph on its own?

Yes. The glyph grid and the ring charms are loose pieces: ungroup the file in your cutting software and delete the ones you do not need. For a single sign at full size, with its constellation and its figure, open that sign’s own set.
