A galaxy of the kind our own is thought to be: a long bar of stars through the core, with one arm leaving each end and curling most of the way round. One piece that turns onto itself twice.

Scaling a design scales its thinnest part too. Here is this one at seven sizes, from 1 to 12 inches on its longer side, with how many copies fit a 12 × 12 inch sheet or mat.
| Size, width × height | Narrowest part | Cut length | Fit on a 12 in sheet | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 0.88 in (25 × 22 mm) | 0.64 mm | 199 mm | 110 | Fine detail: vinyl and paper only, weed with care |
| 2 × 1.76 in (51 × 45 mm) | 1.3 mm | 398 mm | 30 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 3 × 2.64 in (76 × 67 mm) | 1.9 mm | 597 mm | 12 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 4 × 3.52 in (102 × 89 mm) | 2.5 mm | 796 mm | 6 | Vinyl, card and thin sheet |
| 6 × 5.28 in (152 × 134 mm) | 3.8 mm | 1,193 mm | 2 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
| 8 × 7.04 in (203 × 179 mm) | 5.1 mm | 1,591 mm | 1 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
| 12 × 10.56 in (305 × 268 mm) | 7.6 mm | 2,387 mm | 1 | Any material, including 3 mm wood and acrylic |
The narrowest part is the thinnest neck that holds the design together; sharp tips are not counted. For wood and acrylic, keep it at least as wide as the sheet is thick. How to open the file in Cricut, Silhouette and laser software.
