What to make with them
A garland is a border with a sag in it. It goes across the top of a sign above the words, along the rim of a tray or a mug, across the flap of an envelope, or over the names on a wedding welcome board. For a sign 400 mm wide, cut the garland about 320 mm wide so that there is a margin at each end. The pine and holly garlands are the Christmas ones; the greenery and flower garlands suit weddings and spring; the hearts, stars and paper chain are for parties and nurseries. Two copies of a draped garland, one flipped upside down under the other, make an oval frame.
Cutting notes
Every garland here is about three times as wide as it is tall, so at 100 mm wide the parts are small: the string is about 2 mm wide and the pine needles a little under that. In vinyl that is fine. In card or thin plywood, cut at 200 mm wide or more, or the string will not carry the weight of what hangs from it. Weed the pine garland from the stem outwards along each needle. The bead garland and the paper chain have no thin string at all and are the strongest for cutting from wood.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I make a garland longer?
Scale it wider, or place two copies end to end and overlap the end bows or knots so they weld into one. The double swag already repeats, so three or four copies in a row make a garland for the whole length of a mantelpiece sign.
Can I cut the heart garland as a real paper garland?
The file is a picture of one, cut as a single piece. For a real garland, cut hearts from card (the heart set has plain ones), punch two holes in each and thread them on string. This design then makes the matching card or tag.
Which garland works on a curved surface such as a mug?
The level leaf garland wraps round a mug best, because it has no sag to distort. The draped garlands suit flat or gently curved surfaces. Cut them in permanent vinyl and apply from the middle outwards.
