Cutting a batch of cards
Each file is a whole card as one flat sheet, with the spine cut as a row of short slits. There is no score line to set up, which matters when you are cutting twenty cards in an evening: load the card, cut, fold along the slits and move on. The slits stop short of the edges, so each card comes off the mat in one piece.
White or kraft card of 220 to 270 gsm suits most of these, with a liner of red, green or gold paper glued inside the front so the cut-outs show in colour. Cut the liner about 5 mm smaller than the front panel all round. The snowflake has the finest parts in the set, so cut that one at full size and use a sharp blade.
Sizes and envelopes
The files are 100 mm on their longer side and are scaled up to the size each note gives. The A6 cards are cut 210 mm long from half a sheet of A4 and take a C6 envelope. The A2 cards are cut 8.5 inches long from half a sheet of Letter. The square cards are 280 mm long opened out, which fits A4; on Letter card cut them at 270 mm. The slim card fits a DL envelope.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How does the pop-up tree work?
The tree is five strips cut side by side, each folded on three lines. The middle strip is hinged highest on the back of the card and the outer ones lowest, so the fronts stand in one plane as three steps. Every strip is as long as the two parts of the card it bridges, so the tree lies flat when the card is shut.
Can the bauble card hang on the tree?
Yes. The hole in the cap goes through both layers of the folded card, so a ribbon or a hook through it holds the card shut and lets it hang.
Do I need a liner?
No, but the cut-outs show best against one. Without a liner the writing inside shows through the front, so write on the right-hand inside page, clear of the cut-outs.
