Which box for which ornament
A round bauble needs a cube a little wider than itself. The window cube is cut 258 mm wide and makes a box 62 mm each way, for a bauble up to 58 mm across; the slot in its lid lets the hanging ribbon through, so the bauble hangs in the middle of the window. The box with a star lid is 74 mm square and takes a larger one laid in tissue.
Flat ornaments, such as acrylic, wood or glass discs, go in the slim boxes. The 4 inch box is 108 mm square inside and 12 mm deep, cut 250 mm wide; the drawer takes a 3 inch disc; the hang tab box is for a disc up to 91 mm. The files open at 100 mm on their longer side, so scale each one to its cut size first. To fit another ornament, scale the file by the size you need divided by the size given.
Folding, gluing and card
Fold every line before gluing. On the boxes made from a row of four walls, glue the side tab inside the first wall to make a tube, then close the base: fold the three small tabs in and glue the full panel over them. The tuck lid closes last, its two dust flaps folded in under it. The lidded box and the drawer are trays: fold the four walls up and glue each corner tab inside the next wall.
Card of 230 to 300 gsm is right for a box that will be handled and stored. Glue a square of clear acetate behind the window before you close the box, 5 mm larger all round than the hole, if the ornament is to be kept dust free. For glass, add shredded tissue: a card box stops scratches, not a fall.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What size ornament fits the window cube?
Cut 258 mm wide, the cube is 62 mm each way, so a bauble up to 58 mm across fits with a little room. Its sheet is 258 by 199 mm, which fits A4 or Letter card. For a larger bauble use the box with a star lid, or cut the cube from 12 inch card at a larger size.
How do I keep a disc ornament from sliding about?
The flat boxes are only 12 to 14 mm deep, so a disc cannot turn over. To stop it sliding, cut a square of card to fit inside the back, make two small slits in it and tie the ornament to it by its ribbon.
How does the gable box close?
Push the two sides inwards along their slanted fold lines, bring the two roof panels together and the ridge strips meet above them. Thread ribbon through the two holes in the ridge and tie it. The box is 64 by 48 mm, so it suits a bauble up to 44 mm.
