Fleece, lashes and tassels
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The standing llamas are sturdy shapes: the fleece is one rounded cloud, the neck is about 17 mm wide and the legs are straight pegs about 6 mm wide at full size. They cut cleanly in vinyl and card down to 40 mm, and in 3 mm plywood from about 80 mm tall. The scallops have no sharp inside corners, so they weed quickly.
The front-view heads have finer work. The lashes and the split lip are slits about 1.5 mm wide, and the insides of the ears are narrow slots. Cut these at 80 mm or taller in vinyl, weed the lashes with a pin, and in card use 200 gsm or heavier. On the llamas with a blanket, the tassels are four round holes along the hem: back them with bright card, or thread real embroidery cotton through them after cutting.
A llama has a long neck, banana-shaped ears and a flat back. The alpaca here is shorter in the neck with a mop of wool on its head, which is how the two are told apart at a glance.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I colour the blanket on the llama?
The file is one colour, with the blanket marked by a slit and its pattern cut through. For a coloured blanket, cut a rectangle of bright card or vinyl a little smaller than the blanket and stick it behind the pattern, or cut the whole llama twice and trim one copy down to the blanket to layer on top.
Which llama works best very small?
The llama silhouette and the baby llama. Both have only two tiny cuts, for the eye and the mouth, and you can delete those in your cutting software for stickers under 30 mm. The faces need to be larger because of the lashes.
What is the difference between the llama and the alpaca files?
The llama is taller, with a long thin neck and long curved ears. The alpaca has a rounder, fluffier body, a short thick neck and a topknot of wool that hides the base of its ears. For yarn and knitting projects the alpaca is usually the one people mean.
