Instruments drawn to be cut
A brass instrument is mostly thin tubing, and thin tubing is what breaks in a cutter. These are drawn heavier than life so that they hold: the tubes of the trumpet and the horn are 4 to 6 mm thick when the file is 100 mm wide, and the valves are solid blocks with caps. In vinyl they cut well from about 80 mm wide. For wood or acrylic go to 150 mm, and for anything smaller use the hat, the snare drum or the bass drum, which are solid shapes.
The bass drum and the parade banner are left empty on purpose. Put the school name, the mascot or a section name in the opening, sized in your cutting software, and weld or layer it. The banner panel is a little over twice as wide as it is tall, which suits one short word or two stacked lines.
What each piece is
The tall hat is a shako, and the feather on top is a plume. The drum major, who conducts the band on the field, carries a mace: a staff with a ball head, wound with cord. The big horn that wraps round the player is a sousaphone, the marching form of the tuba, built so that the weight sits on the shoulder and the bell faces the crowd. Marching bells are a glockenspiel of metal bars played with mallets, and the lyre is the old badge of bandsmen, still used on uniforms and on the small clip that holds music.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I add our school colours?
Use the layered hat. Its plume and its bands are separate layers, so cut the plume in one school colour and the bands and badge in the other. For the single-colour designs, cut the whole shape in the darker colour and lay it on the lighter one.
Which design works for every section of the band?
The hat and the band on parade stand for everyone. For sections, the snare and the three drums are for the drumline, the bells for the front ensemble, the baton and the boot for twirlers, the mace for drum majors, and the trumpet, horn and sousaphone for the brass.
Can I cut the band silhouette small?
It needs some size. The four marchers are about 75 mm tall when the strip is 100 mm wide, and the mace and the drumsticks are about 2 mm thick at that size, so cut it at 150 mm wide or more. Below that, use the hat or the snare drum.
