Free koala SVG files

Free koala SVG files: a koala face with fluffy ears, the face with glasses, with a mandala and with a crown of gum leaves, koalas hugging a tree, a mother with a joey, a sleeping koala, a baby and a koala hugging a heart. Each is drawn by code and welded into one piece.

Ears, nose and the parts that fall out

Two things make a koala: round fluffy ears set wide on the head, and a large oval nose. In one colour the nose is a problem, because it is a dark shape on a dark face. In these files the nose is outlined by a cut about 2 mm wide that runs round it and stops at the top, leaving a bridge about 7 mm wide. So the nose shows as a shape, and it stays attached. The insides of the ears are windows with a tufted edge: put pale grey or pink behind them.

Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The tufts on the ears are about 2.5 mm high, which is fine for vinyl and card down to about 50 mm. For felt or foam, cut the koala silhouette on a tree, which has no inside cuts.

Which koala for what

The koala face, the koala with glasses and the mandala koala face are symmetrical and fill a square, so they suit shirts, tote bags and round stickers. The koala hugging a tree is tall and narrow and works down the side of a card or a water bottle. The sleeping koala on a branch is long and low, made for a shelf edge, a door plate or a bookmark.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Is a koala a bear?

No. A koala is a marsupial, and the mother carries her joey in a pouch and then on her back. People still say koala bear, so the name appears here, but the animal is closer to a wombat than to any bear.

What colour should I cut a koala from?

Mid grey is true to life, with a darker grey or black nose. Since the nose is part of the same piece, cut the file again in black, keep only the nose and glue it on top. Soft pink or white behind the ear windows finishes it.

How do the glasses work in one piece?

Each lens is a round window with the pupil of the eye left joined to its edge, so nothing drops out. A second, thinner cut runs round the outside of each frame in two arcs, with bridges left at the sides, which is what makes the frames stand out from the face.
