Threshold

Threshold (no dithering)

Every pixel darker than the threshold becomes ink and every lighter one stays paper. There is no dithering at all, so mid-tones collapse into flat black and white shapes.

Good for stencils, logos and line art.

How it decides

One comparison per pixel against a fixed value, 50% by default. It is the baseline every other algorithm is measured against.

Threshold for logos and line art

A logo, a signature or a scanned ink drawing is already black and white, so a threshold keeps its edges clean where a dither would add grain. To save one as black and white pixels, convert an image to 1-bit: it downloads a 1-bit PNG at 50 to 1,200 DPI with the DPI written into the file.

This runs in your browser. Change the algorithm, the number of cells or the threshold, or put a second algorithm next to it.

All algorithms

Every one is an option in the Dither style: dither an image online and export a 1-bit PNG for a laser or SVG dots for a plotter.
