What to make with them
Lake designs go on the things people keep at a cabin: a sign for the porch or the boathouse, tumblers and mugs, a key rack, coasters and tea towels. The monogram ring takes a family name or the name of the lake and suits a round sign 300 mm across or a decal for a boat or a cool box. The dock, the chairs and the lake house are pictures in themselves: cut them 150 to 200 mm wide in vinyl for a sign, or engrave them on a cutting board. The round scenes fit 90 to 100 mm coasters, and the loon stands alone on a mug at about 80 mm wide.
Cutting notes
Ripples and reflections are short slits about 1.8 mm wide at 100 mm, cut into solid water. They are small, so weed them with a pin before you lift the rest, and count them against the picture so none is left behind. Where the water is open, as in the dock and the chairs, it is drawn as thin wavy lines about 1.9 mm wide that end on the frame: keep those designs at 120 mm wide or more in vinyl, and do not trim the frame away. The loon’s spots are about 2 mm squares and are easier on a laser than on a blade.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which lake design takes a name?
The monogram ring. Its middle is empty, with pines at each side and waves below. Type the name in your cutting software and set it inside the ring. A longer line of words can also go under the pines with their reflection, which is a plain strip.
How is water shown in a single colour?
In two ways. In the round scenes the water is solid and the ripples are slits cut into it, so the backing colour shows through as light on the water. In the dock, the chairs and the rowing boat the water is left open and a few thin wavy lines stand for its surface.
Is the lake in the outline a real one?
No. The shoreline and its depth contours are invented, in the style of a lake depth chart. It is there as a pattern to engrave or plot. For a real lake you would need its survey data, which these files do not include.
