How the pieces make a bow

The long piece is the loops. It is narrow at the middle and at both ends and wide between. Put a dot of hot glue on the middle, fold one end back onto it, then the other: the ends overlap each other at the middle, and the wide parts become the two loops. Do not crease the loops; they should stay round. Lay the folded piece on the tails, pinch the middle of both together into a pleat, and wrap the strap round the pinch, gluing it at the back where the clip will cover the join.

The finished bow is half as wide as the loop piece is long, less the overlap, and as tall as the piece is wide. So the classic template cut 220 mm long makes a bow about 100 mm wide, which is the usual four inch bow, and cut 165 mm long it makes a three inch one.

Materials and cutting

Faux leather sheets of 0.8 to 1 mm cut well with a deep-point or knife blade; put the fabric backing down on a strong-grip mat and tape the edges. Glitter canvas cuts glitter side down; every piece here is symmetric, so nothing needs mirroring. Wool-blend felt needs a rotary blade or a bonded backing. For card, 220 to 250 gsm folds into loops without cracking.

A sheet of faux leather is usually about 200 by 300 mm, so the 220 mm loop piece lies along its long side. The strap is drawn long enough to go once round the pinched middle with about a neck’s width to spare; trim it if your material is thin.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What size do I cut for a four inch bow?

Scale the classic template so the loop piece is 220 mm long. The bow comes out about 100 mm wide and 55 mm tall. For a three inch bow cut it 165 mm long, and for a five inch one, 275 mm.

How do I attach the clip?

Glue an alligator clip or a snap clip along the back of the bow and bring the strap round over its top bar before you glue the strap shut, so the strap holds the clip as well as the pleat.

Why are the ends of the loop piece narrow?

Because they finish at the middle of the bow, on top of the narrow centre. Three narrow layers pinch into a neat pleat under the strap; three wide ones would not.
