Using “Grandpa”
For mugs, caps, workshop signs, fishing gear and birthday shirts. Grandchildren’s names often go underneath in a smaller line, so every version leaves the bottom edge clear. On a shirt, cut it 230 mm wide.
Which version cuts most easily
Lettering is many small pieces, and the count differs by typeface. The stencil plate is always a single piece. The script versions weld the letters of each word together, leaving only dots and separate words loose. The block capitals and slab versions are one piece per letter, with thick strokes that weed easily. Each design’s page lists its piece count and its narrowest part at seven sizes.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I add the grandchildren’s names?
Type them in your cutting software, one line or a row with small stars between, and place them under the word at about a third of its height.
Can I change the wording or the typeface?
Not on this page: each file is finished artwork. The typefaces are Pacifico, Lobster, Kaushan Script, Lilita One, Alfa Slab One, Amatic SC and Bebas Neue, all free to install, so you can set your own words in the same lettering in your cutting software.
