The cap, the cord and the tassel
The cap is drawn as it is usually pictured: a flat diamond board over a skull cap, with the tassel hanging over the front edge. The cord that crosses the board is a cut line, and the cord and tassel that hang below the edge are solid. The hanging cord is about 2.7 mm wide when the cap is 100 mm across, and the strands of the tassel are a little over 2 mm, so cut the caps with a tassel at 60 mm or wider in card and vinyl.
For wood and acrylic, the cord wants more care: at 100 mm it is strong enough in 3 mm plywood if the grain runs down the cord, and the graduation cap on a stack of books or with a diploma is sturdier still, because the tassel is shorter. The cap silhouette has no inside cuts and is the one for the smallest sizes.
Years, names and school colours
None of the files carries a year or a school name, so they do not go out of date. The monogram frame, the laurel wreath and the banner all leave space for a name or a year in your own lettering. For school colours, cut the cap in black and the tassel again in gold or the class colour, and lay the second tassel over the first.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which side should the tassel hang on?
By custom the tassel hangs on the right before the degree is given and is moved to the left afterwards. The classic cap here has it on the right of the picture and the tilted cap on the left; mirror either one in your cutting software if you want the other side.
How do I make the tassel a different colour from the cap?
Cut the whole design twice, once in each colour. From the second sheet keep only the tassel and its hanging cord, snipped off where the cord meets the board, and stick it over the tassel on the first.
Can I use the cap from above to decorate a real cap?
It is a picture of a cap, not a full-size pattern. A real board is about 240 mm square, so measure yours, then build the decoration at that size and use this design as a small motif on it.
