Sizing a topper to the bag

A topper should be about 5 mm wider than the bag it covers. Measure your bag flat, add 5 mm, and scale the file to that width: the files open at 100 mm on their longer side, which is close to finished size but not exact. For the scalloped topper that means cutting it 105, 130 or 155 mm wide for bags 100, 125 or 150 mm wide, which are the 4, 5 and 6 inch cellophane bags sold for sweets.

Depth matters less. Cut 105 mm wide, the scalloped topper is 50 mm deep each side of the fold, which hides the folded-over top of the bag and leaves room for a staple or two. Several toppers fit on one sheet: four of that size on A4 or Letter card.

Making them up

Fill the bag, fold its top over once or twice towards the back, sit the topper over the fold and staple through everything, once near each end. Double-sided tape inside the topper works too and leaves no staple showing; so does a hole punched through all the layers and tied with ribbon.

Card of 200 to 250 gsm is right. The fold is a row of slits cut by the blade, so the topper folds exactly in the middle without scoring. The front panel is the one below the fold in the file: that is where the cut-out shapes are, and where to put a name or a sticker. Back any cut-out with coloured paper glued inside the topper.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What size bag topper do I need for a 4 inch bag?

A 4 inch bag is about 100 mm wide, so cut the topper 105 mm wide. The scalloped topper at that width folds to 105 by 50 mm.

Which way up does the topper go?

The panel with the shaped edge and the cut-outs is the front. In the file it is the lower half; folded over the bag it hangs down the front, with the plain panel behind.

How do the bunny ears stand up?

Each ear is cut round its sides and tip but not across its base, and the fold line stops either side of it. When you fold the back panel down, the ears stay in line with the front panel and stand above the fold.
