Why a footprint is loose pieces

An inked footprint is a sole and five toes with bare paper between them, so an honest footprint file is six separate pieces for each foot. In adhesive vinyl or iron-on that is no trouble: weed the background and lift everything at once on transfer tape or the carrier sheet, and the toes keep their places. For paper, card and wood, where loose toes would be a nuisance, use the silhouette, which welds the toes to the sole, or the heart, the ornament and the layered circle, where the feet are cut out of a single piece or laid on one.

Sizes for keepsakes

A newborn’s foot is about 75 to 80 mm long, so scaling a single print to that height gives a life-size keepsake to go beside a name and a date. For a birth announcement card, a pair 50 to 60 mm wide sits well above the text. The smallest toe is about 6 mm across when the pair is 100 mm wide, so the pair stays easy to weed down to about 40 mm wide; below that, use the silhouette.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which is the left foot and which is the right?

Seen from above, as a print on paper, the big toe is on the inside. So the foot with its big toe on the right is the left foot, and it goes on the left of the pair. In every pair here the big toes are next to each other in the middle.

How do I keep the toes in place?

Do not lift the pieces one at a time. After cutting vinyl, weed away the background, press transfer tape over the whole design and move it as one. With iron-on the clear carrier sheet does the same job.

Can I add a name and a birth date?

Yes. The design with a banner has a blank ribbon for it, and the heart and the circle have room below the feet. Type the words in your cutting software and size them to fit.
