Small buds on thin stems
Lavender is one of the finer plants to cut: the stems are slim and the buds are small. On these files the stems are 2.3 to 2.8 mm wide and the buds 4 to 8 mm long when the file is 100 mm tall, and each bud is welded to the stem along its base. That is comfortable in vinyl from about 70 mm tall. In card and wood, cut single sprigs at 100 mm or more, or pick the simple lavender, whose stem is 4 mm wide and whose buds are plain circles.
Because the spikes are so slender, lavender suits tall narrow things: bookmarks, the side of a tumbler, a soap wrapper, a seed packet or the margin of a letter.
Two colours from one cut
Real lavender is grey-green below and violet above, and the change comes exactly where the flower spike starts. With a one-piece sprig you can get both colours by cutting the file twice and trimming each copy just under the lowest whorl of buds. The layered lavender has the stems, flowers and bow as separate pieces already.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which lavender design fits a jar label or a soap wrapper?
The single lavender sprig or the two crossed sprigs. Both are narrow and upright and still read at 40 to 50 mm tall in vinyl. For anything smaller, use the simple lavender.
Can I put a name inside the lavender wreath?
Yes. The wreath, the heart and the monogram frame are all open in the middle. Size your lettering to clear the leaves on the inside and cut it as its own piece, or weld a letter that touches the stems if you want everything in one.
How do I stop the thin stems tearing when I weed vinyl?
Weed towards the stem, not along it, and hold the stem down with the back of the hook as you lift the waste beside it. Cutting at 100 mm or taller also helps, because the stems are then at least 2.3 mm wide.
