Ropes are the thin part
A hammock is a wide bed on two thin ropes, and the ropes decide how small it can be cut. Here they are about 2.4 mm thick when the file is 100 mm wide, and the stripes in the bed are slots about 1.7 mm wide that stop short of both ends, so the bed never falls apart. Vinyl copes with that from about 90 mm wide. In card go to 120 mm, and in wood or acrylic to 180 mm, where the ropes are over 4 mm. The fringed hammock and the hanging chair have tassels about 2 mm wide, so treat them the same way.
The scenes with a flat base, such as the silhouette between two trees, the palms and the pines, are drawn to stand along the bottom of a shadow box. The trunks and the ground are one piece with the hammock, so nothing has to be glued in place.
A word from the Caribbean
The word hammock came into English through Spanish hamaca, from the Taíno people of the Caribbean, who slept in beds woven from bark and plant fibre. Sailors took the idea to sea, where a slung bed stays level while the ship rolls. The two common kinds today are both here: the gathered hammock, which bunches to a single rope at each end, and the spreader-bar hammock, held open by a wooden bar.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I put a name on the hammock?
Use the hammock with the plain bed. Its bed has no stripes, and the plain part is about 29 mm wide and 14 mm deep when the file is 100 mm wide. Scale the file up until a name fits, then cut the name from a second colour and lay it along the curve of the bed.
Which hammock is best for a shadow box?
The silhouette between two trees, the palms at sunset or the pines with a tarp. Each stands on a flat strip of ground the full width of the file, so it sits square on the bottom ledge. Cut it a few millimetres narrower than the inside of the box.
Why can I only see a hat and two feet?
Because that is all anyone sees of a person in a hammock. The sleeper is hidden by the cloth, which keeps the drawing simple enough to cut and lets it stand for anybody. The cat is drawn the same way: ears, a back and a tail.
