Cutting and folding

These are patterns for real boxes, not pictures of them. Each fold line is a row of short slits that the blade cuts along with the outline, so there is no scoring tool to fit: the card folds along the slits. Fold every line before gluing anything, then glue the long side tab first and the base last.

The files are 100 mm on their longer side, so scale them up before cutting. The plain tuck box, cut 210 mm wide, makes a box 50 mm square and 70 mm tall from a sheet 210 by 183 mm, which fits A4 or Letter card. The widest sheets are the coffin at 265 by 141 mm and the candy box at 240 by 99 mm; both still fit A4 or Letter.

Card, glue and what goes inside

Card of 200 to 250 gsm is right for all of them. Double-sided tape is the quickest way to hold a tab; tacky glue is stronger but needs a minute under a finger. The bag-topped boxes, the pumpkin and the unicorn, close by folding their side walls inwards along the three lines cut in each, like the side of a paper bag.

Paper boxes are not food safe on their own. Put wrapped sweets straight in, and line the box with a cellophane bag or baking paper for anything unwrapped, such as fudge, biscuits or popcorn. A box of this size holds a handful of sweets, not a slice of cake.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How many sweets does a treat box hold?

The plain box, cut 210 mm wide, is 50 by 50 by 70 mm inside, which is about 175 ml: a good handful of wrapped sweets. Scaled up by a quarter it holds nearly twice as much, but the sheet is then too wide for A4 and needs 12 inch card.

Which treat box needs no glue?

The pyramid: its four sides are held by a ribbon through the holes at their tips. The petal-top favour box and the take-out pail lock at the top without glue, but each still has glued seams lower down.

How do I close the pumpkin and the unicorn?

Push the middle of each side wall inwards so that it folds along its centre line, bring the front and back together, and tie ribbon or twine through the two holes at the top.
