How the tapered box goes together
A popcorn box is wider at the rim than at the base, so its four walls do not sit in a straight row on the sheet: they fan out, each joined to the next along a slanting fold. Fold the three slanting lines and the tab line, fold the base and its three small tabs, then glue the side tab inside the first wall. Push the base up into place last and press it on to its tabs from inside with a finger.
The files are 100 mm on their longer side, so scale them up before cutting. The scalloped box, cut 250 mm wide, is 45 mm square at the base and 91 mm tall, and its sheet is 250 by 147 mm, which fits A4 or Letter card. It holds about 260 ml of popped corn, which is one small serving.
Card, stripes and food
Use 200 to 250 gsm card. White card with red stripes is the classic look: cut the layered design, or cut any box from striped scrapbook paper backed with plain card. The fold lines are rows of slits, so no scoring is needed, but they are not grease tight.
Popcorn is oily and warm popcorn is damp, so line the box with a paper bag, a cone of baking paper or a square of greaseproof paper before you fill it. Fill the boxes just before the film starts: paper that sits full for an hour goes soft at the base.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big should a popcorn box be?
For a party, the scalloped box cut 250 mm wide is about right: 91 mm tall and about 260 ml. For favours, the pair of mini boxes cut 190 mm tall are 56 mm tall each. A full cinema carton is about twice as tall, which is more than one sheet of A4 or 12 inch card allows, so make more boxes of this size instead.
Why are the walls curved round on the sheet?
Because the box tapers. Walls that lean outwards are wider at the top than the bottom, and four of them side by side can only stay joined if they fan out. Once folded and glued they stand in a square.
Can I cut the stripes with the box?
Not as cut-outs: stripes cut out of the walls would let the popcorn fall through and weaken the box. Cut them from red paper as a second layer and glue them on, or print the outline version and colour them in.
