Battlements, slits and the portcullis
A castle is told by its top edge. The square teeth along the walls are battlements, and each tooth here is about 4 mm wide when the castle is 100 mm across, wide enough to cut in wood as well as vinyl. The narrow windows are arrow slits, about 2 mm wide: they weed out with a pin, or you can leave them in on a very small cut and lose nothing.
The gate has a portcullis, the iron grille that drops to close it. Its bars are part of the castle: the gateway is cut as nine small openings and the bars are what is left between them, about 2 mm wide at 100 mm. In wood, cut the castle at 180 mm or more, or use the simple castle, whose doorway is one plain arch.
Knights, princesses and the beach
The stone castle with a gatehouse is the one for knights, dragons and history projects. The princess castle has pointed towers, a heart window and pennants, and is drawn from scratch: it is not the castle of any film or park. The sandcastle belongs on beach bags and holiday albums, and the bouncy castle on party invitations. The monogram frame takes a name or an age between its two towers.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Is the princess castle a film castle?
No. Castles from films and theme parks are protected and cannot be given away. This one is an ordinary storybook castle with five pointed towers, drawn for this library, so it is safe to use on things you make to sell.
Which castle is best for a birthday shirt?
For a small child, the simple castle or the bouncy castle: both are bold and weed quickly. For a name or an age, the castle monogram frame has a blank panel about 44 mm wide and 42 mm tall when the file is 100 mm wide.
Can I stand the castle up as a decoration?
Yes. Every castle here has a flat strip of ground along the bottom. Cut it from 3 mm plywood or thick card at 150 mm wide or more and glue a small triangle of the same material behind it as a prop. The chess rook stands on its own foot.
