Eyes that stay in the tail
The eye at the end of a peacock feather is a dot inside a ring, and in a one-colour cut a dot inside a hole falls out. Here each eye is a teardrop window, and the pupil stands on a short stalk that runs down to the base of the window, like the shaft of the real feather. The pupil stays joined to the tail, and the window round it shows whatever colour you put behind. Gold, teal or bright blue card behind a dark green or black peacock gives the tail its shine.
These are detailed designs. On the fanned peacock the stalks and the bars between windows are between 1 and 2 mm wide at 100 mm, so treat 100 mm as the smallest size for vinyl, and cut card or wood at 150 mm or more. For anything small, use the peacock silhouette, which has no inside cuts apart from the eye.
Fanned or trailing
A peacock only fans its train to display. The rest of the time it carries the train folded behind it, where it trails on the ground or hangs from a perch. The fanned designs are symmetrical and fill a square or a half circle, which suits signs, cards and coasters. The peacock in profile and the peacock on a branch are long and diagonal, which suits bookmarks, the corner of a page and tall narrow spaces.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Will the centres of the peacock eyes fall out?
No. Each pupil sits on a stalk joined to the feather below it, so it is part of the tail. You weed the teardrop round it and the pupil stays put. The layered peacock works differently: its gold eyes and dark pupils are separate pieces that you stack on the green fan.
How small can I cut the fanned peacock?
Keep it at 100 mm wide or more in vinyl and 150 mm or more in card. Below that the stalks under the pupils get too thin to weed cleanly. If you need a small peacock, the silhouette is the one to shrink.
What colours should I use for a peacock?
An Indian peacock has a bright blue head, neck and body, a green and bronze train, and eyes of gold and green round a dark blue centre. For one colour, cut from dark teal or black and back it with gold or metallic paper. For the full effect use the layered peacock in green, blue, gold and navy.
