Derrick, rig and pumpjack

Three different machines get called an oil well. The derrick is the tall lattice tower that stands over the hole while it is being drilled: it holds the crown block at the top and the travelling block that raises and lowers the drill pipe. The pumpjack, or nodding donkey, is what is left on the site afterwards to lift the oil, a beam rocking on a post with a curved horse head at one end and a counterweight at the other. An offshore rig is a whole drilling platform standing in the sea on legs.

A derrick is nothing but thin steel, so it is the fine one to cut. At 100 mm tall its legs are about 3 mm wide, its girts 2.5 mm and its braces 2 mm. That is fine in vinyl from about 90 mm and in card from 110 mm. For plywood or metal cut it at 200 mm or more. The pumpjack is far sturdier and holds at 60 mm.

Blank on purpose

Nothing here carries a company name, a brand colour or a number. The globe and the dial of the gas pump are blank, the price window is an empty opening and the sign on the derrick is a plain board about 65 mm wide and 8 mm tall between its two lines at 100 mm, so the name of a family lease, a town or a crew can go on in your own lettering.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

What is the difference between an oil derrick and a pumpjack?

A derrick is the tall tower used to drill the well. A pumpjack is the low rocking pump that lifts oil out of a well once it is finished. Old photographs of oilfields show forests of derricks, a working field today is mostly pumpjacks. The set has both, separately and together.

Can I cut the oil derrick from metal or wood?

Yes, at a large enough size. At 300 mm tall the legs are about 9 mm wide and the braces 6 mm, which a plasma table or a laser handles well. Below about 200 mm the braces get thin for plywood: use the oil drop badge or the pumpjack at small sizes.

How do I add a name to the derrick?

Use the oil derrick with a blank sign. Type the name in your cutting software, fit it between the two lines on the board and either cut it out of the board or cut it from a second colour and lay it on top.
