Tyres first

A monster truck is two enormous tyres with a small pickup on top, and the tyres are what children look at. Each tyre here has fourteen square lugs round its tread and a five-spoke wheel in the middle, and makes up more than a third of the height of the truck. The lugs are about 4 mm wide when the truck is 100 mm long, so they cut cleanly in vinyl and card at that size and still read at 60 mm.

Between the tyres you can see what holds the truck up: the frame, a link running to each axle and two shock absorbers at each end. Those bars are 3 to 3.5 mm wide at 100 mm. For wood or acrylic, cut at 150 mm or more, or use the simple monster truck for children, which has no thin bars at all.

Birthdays and seasons

Monster trucks are cut most for birthdays: a shirt, a banner, a cake topper. The truck with flames and the wheelie are the usual choices, with the age added beside the truck in your own lettering. The Halloween truck has jack-o’-lantern wheels and the valentine truck has hearts for spokes, so the same truck can come back at other times of the year.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Is this a real show truck?

No. Show trucks have names, paint schemes and body shapes that belong to their owners, and those cannot be given away. This is a plain pickup body on a monster truck chassis, drawn from scratch, which makes it safe to use on things you sell.

Which monster truck is best for a cake topper?

The simple monster truck for children or the monster truck silhouette. Both are sturdy shapes with fat tyres. Cut them from glitter card at about 120 mm long and tape a skewer behind each tyre. The wheelie also works well because it stands tall.

Can I make the tyres a different colour from the body?

Yes. Cut the truck twice, once in the body colour and once in black. Keep the tyres from the black cut and lay them over the tyres of the first, or leave the first cut whole and simply add the black tyres on top.
