Which mower is which

The walk-behind mower is the one most gardens have: an engine on a deck, a handle and a bag. A riding mower, or lawn tractor, has the engine under a hood in front and the driver over the rear wheels. A zero-turn has no steering wheel at all. Its two big rear wheels are driven separately by a pair of lap bars, so it can turn within its own length, and the deck sits out in front on casters. A stand-on mower works the same way with the driver on a platform at the back. The reel mower is the oldest kind, with a cylinder of blades turned by its own wheels and no engine.

None of these is drawn from a particular make. They carry no badges, and the colours of the layered file are plain red, black and grey.

Cutting wheels, handles and grass

The parts to watch are the handle of the walk-behind mower, about 3.5 mm thick when the file is 100 mm wide, and the lap bars and roll bar of the zero-turn, which are about the same. In vinyl they cut well from 90 mm wide. For wood or acrylic use 150 mm or more, or pick the silhouette, which fills in the wheels and stands on a solid strip of grass. The emblem is made for business use: the banner is an open window, so the name can be cut from a second colour and set behind it, or engraved on the surface underneath.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Can I use the emblem for my lawn care business?

Yes. It is drawn for that: a mower over an empty banner inside a ring. The opening is 66 mm by 11 mm when the emblem is 100 mm across, so at 300 mm on a truck door it takes a name in letters about 25 mm tall. The licence on the main SVG page covers commercial use.

What is the difference between the riding mower and the zero-turn?

The riding mower steers with a wheel like a small tractor and has its cutting deck between the front and rear wheels. The zero-turn steers with two lap bars that drive the rear wheels at different speeds, has small caster wheels at the front and usually a roll bar behind the seat.

Which mower is best for a small decal?

The silhouette. It has no slots or spokes to weed and holds together down to about 40 mm wide. The riding mower and the walk-behind mower with its bag need about 90 mm before the wheel spokes and the grille cut cleanly.
