How a gable box closes
A gable box is a carton with a roof. Above the four walls are four roof panels. The front and back ones lean in until the two handle panels on top of them meet. Each side roof panel has two diagonal folds from its bottom corners to the middle of its top edge: push the middle of the panel inwards and it folds along them, into the box, as the handles come together.
On the plain box one handle has a hand hole cut right out, and the other has the same shape cut on three sides only. That leaves a tongue: push it through the hole in the first handle and fold it up, and the box stays shut with no ribbon or glue. The roof panels must be longer than half the depth of the box to close. On the plain box they are 35 mm long over a box 49 mm deep.
Sizes and card
The files are 100 mm on their longer side, so scale them up before cutting. The plain box, cut 260 mm wide, is 76 by 49 mm and 45 mm tall to the eaves, and its sheet is 260 by 154 mm, which fits A4 or Letter card. The large box is meant for 12 inch card: cut 290 mm wide it is 85 mm wide and 70 mm tall to the eaves, and its sheet is 290 by 195 mm.
Use 230 to 300 gsm card: the handle carries the weight of the box, so thin card tears at the hand hole. Glue the long side tab, then press the base on to its three tabs from inside. For food, line the box with a napkin or greaseproof paper; the fold lines are rows of slits and will let crumbs and grease through.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How much weight will the handle take?
In 250 gsm card, a filled party box of sweets or a slice of cake is fine. For anything heavier, such as a jar or a mug, carry the box from underneath: the handle is a single layer of card each side of the hand hole.
What is the difference between a gable box and a gable end box?
On a gable box the ends of the roof fold inwards, like a milk carton. On a gable end box the end walls are cut to a point and stay flat, like the end of a house, and the roof panels fold down over them. The house design here is a gable end box.
Can I make the large box without a 12 inch mat?
Not at its full size: its sheet is 290 mm wide. Scaled down to 92 percent it fits A4 or Letter card, and is then about the size of the plain box but taller.
