Free crawfish SVG files

Free crawfish SVG files: crawfish from above with claws raised and spread, a boiled crawfish in profile, a cute one, a boil pot, a monogram frame, a round badge, a split design for a name and a single claw. Each is drawn by code as clean closed shapes.

Legs, feelers and the size to cut

A crawfish has ten legs and two long feelers, and those are the parts that limit how small it can be cut. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. At that size the walking legs taper from about 3 mm to 1.5 mm and the feelers from about 2 mm to 1.3 mm. Outdoor vinyl holds that well at 100 mm, which is a good size for a boil pot, a cooler or an ice chest. For a shirt, 200 mm across the chest gives the legs room. For a small decal or anything cut from wood, use the crawfish silhouette at 120 mm or more, or the crawfish claw.

The creases across the tail and the ribs of the fan are cut lines about 1.3 mm wide. On red vinyl over a white or silver pot they show as pale lines, which is all the detail a crawfish needs.

For a crawfish boil

The boil pot design, the crawfish in a round badge and the boiled crawfish in profile are drawn with a boil in mind: invitations, aprons, pot lids and paper for the table. Cut the split crawfish at 250 mm or more and put a family name and the year between the two rules for a sign that comes out every spring.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Crawfish, crayfish or crawdad?

They are the same animal. Crawfish is the usual word in Louisiana and along the Gulf coast, crawdad further north and west, and crayfish in Britain and in science. A lobster is a much larger relative with the same body plan, so the single claw works for both.

How do I weed the walking legs without tearing them?

Weed from the body outwards so each leg is pulled along its length, not across it, and keep the vinyl warm. At sizes under 100 mm, switch to the crawfish silhouette, which has the same legs but no inside cuts to work round.

How do I add a name to the split crawfish?

Scale the design first, then type the name in a bold font and size it to fit between the two straight rules, leaving a small margin above and below. The two halves and the name are separate pieces, so use transfer tape to keep their spacing.
