The notch that makes it sakura

A cherry blossom has five petals like many other flowers. What sets it apart is the small notch in the tip of every petal, and every blossom here keeps it, down to the 8 mm flowers on the tree. On the single flowers the notch is about 4 mm deep at 100 mm, which cuts cleanly in any material. On the branch, the tree and the wreath it is closer to 1 mm, so in card or wood cut those at 150 mm or more, or the notches will soften into a plain round petal.

The stamens on the large flower are slits about 1.6 mm wide with round heads. Weed them with a pin, lifting from the round end.

Colour, and where the branch goes

Blossom is at its best in two colours: near-black or dark brown for the wood and pale pink for the flowers. Cut the branch twice, once in each, and keep the wood from one and the flowers from the other; the layered blossoms add a deep pink heart and gold stamens. On a wall, let the branch enter from a top corner and run downwards across the space, as a real bough hangs, and scatter the loose petals below it as if they were falling.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

How do I tell a cherry blossom from a plum or peach blossom in a design?

Look at the petal tips. Cherry petals have a notch, plum petals are round and peach petals come to a point. All the flowers in this set are drawn with the notch.

Can I make the branch longer or fuller?

Yes. Add a second copy of the cherry blossom branch, flip or turn it, overlap the thick end of one with a twig of the other and weld. The sakura twig also joins on well as a side shoot.

What size should the falling petals be?

On the sheet they are 12 to 17 mm long when the file is 100 mm. For a wall, scale the whole file up three or four times so each petal is about the size of a real one, and mix in a few mirrored copies so no two fall the same way.
