Linked hearts that stay in one piece
Two overlapping hearts are the usual anniversary motif, and the awkward one to cut: where the outlines cross, the piece in the middle has nothing to hold it. These files draw the hearts as links. Each heart is cut away except for a narrow band where the other crosses it, so the middle stays joined to the card by those bands and the two hearts read as linked rings. Nothing is loose and nothing needs gluing back.
The same care goes into the greeting. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY is cut in capitals with a bridge across each closed letter, so the middles of the A, the P and the R stay in the card.
Sizes, card and colour
The files are 100 mm on their longer side and are scaled up to the size each note gives: 210 mm long for the A6 cards, 8.5 inches for the A2 card and 280 mm for the square ones, which fit A4; cut those at 270 mm on Letter card. Use card of 220 to 270 gsm. A liner of gold, silver or ruby paper inside the front, 5 mm smaller than the panel all round, gives the cut-outs the colour of the year being marked. The pop-up sheet folds best in lighter card of about 180 gsm, glued into a heavier cover.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How do I add the number of years?
Add it in your cutting software before you cut, on the front panel below the hearts, or cut it from a second colour and glue it on. The files leave the lower third of most fronts clear for it.
How does the pop-up cake fold flat?
Each tier is a strip hinged to the back of the card and to its floor, with one fold between. The three tiers stand the same distance from the back, and each strip is as long as the two parts of the card it bridges, so they all collapse together when the card is shut.
Which card suits a wedding anniversary best?
The round card and the card with linked hearts are the most formal. In white card with a metallic liner they suit a silver or golden anniversary; the flutes are lighter in tone and suit a first one.
