The tail and the snout decide the size
A seahorse is all curve: an arched neck, a round belly and a tail that winds forward into a spiral. Two parts of it are thin. The snout is a tube about 5 mm deep and the last turn of the tail is about 3.5 mm wide when the design is 100 mm tall, and the narrowest part of the classic seahorse is 2.6 mm. Vinyl and card hold all of that down to about 50 mm tall. For 3 mm plywood or acrylic, cut the seahorse at 120 mm or taller, or use the baby seahorse, which is thick all over.
The inside of the tail spiral is a small closed gap. Weed it with the point of a hook before you lift the rest, or it will come up with the transfer tape. The rings across the body are slits about 1.5 mm wide: they give the animal its armoured look, and a second colour laid behind shows through them.
Pairs, frames and beach house signs
Seahorses are a wedding and anniversary favourite because a pair, face to face, makes a heart on its own. That design is mirrored exactly and welded at the snouts and the tails. The monogram frame turns the two outwards and puts a ring between them for an initial. For bathrooms and beach houses, the seahorse in seagrass makes a good panel on its own, and the silhouette pairs well with a starfish or a shell.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Do the two seahorses making a heart come as one piece?
Yes. They are welded where the snouts touch and again where the tails cross, so the pair lifts as a single shape. Because the left half is the exact mirror of the right, you can also fold a card along the middle and cut half the design on the fold.
How big is the ring in the seahorse monogram frame?
The ring is about 37 mm across inside when the whole design is 100 mm wide. Scale the design up until the ring suits your lettering: at 200 mm wide the opening is about 74 mm, enough for a three-letter monogram.
Which seahorse is best for small earrings or charms?
The seahorse silhouette. Its only inside cuts are the eye and the gap in the tail spiral, and the spikes on the back are short and blunt. In faux leather or 2 mm acrylic it holds at 40 mm tall. Put the hanging hole in the crown.
