Sizes, materials and the thin parts of a raven
A raven is a solid black bird, which is why it cuts so well in a single colour: the whole design is the outline. Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. On the raven silhouette the legs are the narrowest part, about 3 mm wide above the foot, and the toes lie flat on the ground line so that the bird can stand on a shelf edge, a sign or a layered scene. Vinyl and card hold that down to about 50 mm. In 3 mm plywood keep the bird at 90 mm or taller, or use the raven on a crescent moon, where the legs are backed by the moon.
The flying raven and the raven with spread wings have parted feathers at the wing tips. Each one tapers to a rounded end about 2 mm wide, so weed along the feather from the body outwards. The raven tree has thin branch ends: cut it at 100 mm or larger.
Raven or crow
A raven is the biggest of the crow family: it has a heavier bill, shaggy feathers at the throat and a tail that ends in a wedge, where a crow has a fan. From a distance the two are drawn the same way, so the cawing bird on a post and the flock can stand for either. These are all birds from life. None is a team emblem or a character from a story.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How can I tell a raven from a crow in a silhouette?
Look at the bill, the throat and the tail. The raven has a thick bill with a slight hook, a ragged beard of throat feathers and a long tail that narrows to a wedge. The standing raven here has all three.
Is the flock one piece?
No. The flock is seven separate birds, and the raven tree has one bird flying free beside it. Cut them in vinyl and lift them with transfer tape to keep the spacing, or cut them from card and place each one by hand.
Which raven works for a Halloween window?
The raven on a branch, the raven tree and the raven perched on a skull are the usual choices. Cut them from black card and tape them inside the glass, or cut them from matt black vinyl at 150 to 250 mm.
