Sizes, materials and the scalloped clip
Every file is 100 mm on its longer side. The side views show the poodle in a show clip, where the coat is left long in balls and shaved between them: a topknot, a pompom ear, a mane over the chest, a rosette on the hip, a bracelet above each foot and a pompom on the tail. The scalloped edges are those balls of coat. The shaved parts are the thin ones: the legs and the stem of the tail are between 4 and 6 mm across at full size, so keep the standing silhouette at 100 mm or more in 3 mm plywood. In vinyl it cuts well from about 60 mm, and below that the scallops start to merge.
The faces are a narrow muzzle under a round topknot with a long ear on each side. Where the topknot lies over the brow, its edge is cut as a fine scalloped line about 2 mm wide, with small eyes, a nose and a short smile below. Weed that line first, with a pin, and cut a face at 80 mm or wider.
Which poodle for which job
The standing silhouette is cut level under the feet, for the floor of a shadow box. It is also the shape most people mean by a poodle, so it suits 1950s style skirts, bags and party decorations in pink or black felt. The poodle with a bandana has a small heart on the cloth. The bone under the sitting poodle is a blank name plate, and the paw print badge is five loose pieces that need transfer tape or a backing sheet.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Can I cut the standing poodle from felt for a poodle skirt?
Yes. It has nothing inside to cut, and its scallops are round enough for scissors or a rotary blade. Cut it at 200 mm or taller from stiffened felt, then add a line of cord or sequins as a lead from the neck to the waistband.
My poodle has a teddy bear trim, not a show clip. Which design fits?
The face designs and the puppy. They show a round topknot and long fluffy ears, which a pet trim keeps. The side views have the shaved legs and the pompoms of the show clip.
What colours work for the layered face?
It is drawn in apricot: a pale apricot head and chest, a deeper apricot topknot, ears and mane, dark features and a red bow. For a white poodle use white and pale cream. For a black poodle use charcoal and black, with the features in a lighter grey so they show. Leave the bow off if you prefer.
