Stripes that do not fall apart
A lighthouse is painted in bands, spirals or diamonds so that sailors can tell it from its neighbours in daylight. If the stripes ran from edge to edge of a cut file, the tower would fall into separate rings. Here each stripe is an opening that stops about 2.5 mm short of both edges, leaving a rail down each side of the tower that holds everything together.
The railing round the gallery is the finest part: its posts are about 1.8 mm wide when the lighthouse is 100 mm tall. That is fine in vinyl and card at that size. For wood, cut at 150 mm or more, or use the lighthouse silhouette, where the railing is the same but nothing else is thin.
Beams, rocks and the sea
The beams are long wedges welded to the lantern room, so the light never comes loose from the tower. The rocks under the tower are part of it too, and give the lighthouse a flat foot to stand on if you cut it from wood. For a round sign, the lighthouse at night in a ring carries its beams right out to the frame.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
Which lighthouse suits a house sign?
The lighthouse with a lifebuoy frame. The opening in the lifebuoy is about 28 mm across when the file is 100 mm tall, which takes a house number or an initial. Cut it at 250 mm or more for a door and the opening is 70 mm across.
How do I make the stripes red?
Cut the striped lighthouse from white and stick it on red, and the stripes show red through the openings. Or use the layered lighthouse, where the stripes, the tower, the rocks, the sea and the light are separate layers in their own colours.
Is this a real lighthouse?
No. The spiral, the bands and the diamonds are the three common kinds of daymark, and the Maine light is the usual New England arrangement of a tower with a cottage, but none is a portrait of one particular lighthouse.
