How a bag goes together
Every bag here is four walls in a row: front, side, back, side, then a glue tab. Fold every line first. Glue the tab inside the free edge of the front to make a tube. Turn it over and close the base: fold the two small side flaps in, then the back flap, then the front flap, which is as deep as the bag and covers the others completely. Glue it down and stand the bag on a table while it dries, with a hand inside to press the base flat.
The bag with hand slots has a hem: fold it down inside the mouth before you glue the tab, and the slot in the hem lands on the slot in the wall, so the handle is two layers of card. The wine bag is too tall to cut in one piece, so its file is half a bag; cut two, glue each tab to the other half, and close the four equal base flaps one over the next.
Sizes and card
The files open at 100 mm on their longer side, so scale each to the cut size in its note. The bag with hand slots is cut 267 mm wide: its sheet is then 196 mm tall, which fits A4 or Letter card, and the bag is 86 mm wide, 128 mm tall and 42 mm deep. The favour bag is cut 190 mm wide and two fit on a sheet. Scaling a file changes all three sizes of the bag together.
Use card of 180 to 250 gsm, or thick patterned paper of 160 gsm for the smaller bags. A bag carries weight on its base seam and its handles, so glue those well with tacky glue or strong tape. A paper handle is for a gift of a few hundred grams; carry a bottle or a jar with a hand under the base.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
How big a gift bag can I cut from one sheet?
The four walls and the tab sit side by side, so the width of the sheet sets the size. On A4 or Letter card the largest here is the bag with hand slots, 86 mm wide, 128 mm tall and 42 mm deep, cut 267 mm wide. For a bigger bag, cut it in two halves as the wine bag is, each with its own tab.
Will a wine bottle fit the wine bag?
The bag is 84 mm square inside, which takes a standard 750 ml bottle of about 75 mm across but not a wide champagne bottle. It stands 210 mm tall, so the neck of the bottle stays above the mouth of the bag. Each half is 267 by 180 mm and fits A4 or Letter card.
How do I fold the sides in?
The paper bag and the briefcase bag have a fold line down the middle of each side and two diagonals at its foot. Push the middle line inwards and the side tucks in like a shop paper bag. On the other bags the sides are left flat so that the bag stands open.
