Windows a blade can cut

A real cruise ship has a thousand windows, and nobody wants to weed a thousand windows. Here each deck has a few long strips instead, with a row of ten round portholes along the hull. On the ship with four decks at 100 mm long, the strips are about 2.4 mm tall and the portholes about 2.7 mm across, which lift out cleanly with a pin. Under about 70 mm long, use the cruise ship silhouette: it has no inside cuts at all and sits on a flat waterline, so it stands level in a scene.

The radar mast is the only slim part of the ship. In card and wood, cut at 150 mm or more so that the mast and its crossbar are sturdy. For shirts for a family trip, the name frame has an open hull for a surname or the year, and the ship with heart smoke suits a honeymoon or an anniversary sailing.

Other ships in the harbour

Not every ship here is a cruise ship. The ocean liner with four funnels suits vintage travel themes, and the cargo ship and the tug make a set for a child who likes working boats. The life preserver and the ship’s wheel are frames in their own right: both are symmetric and centred on the origin, so they engrave well on round blanks such as coasters and ornaments.

How to open the files

  • Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
  • Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
  • LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
  • Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
  • Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.

Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.

Questions

Which cruise ship design works for matching family shirts?

The cruise ship name frame. Its hull is an open band with room for a surname or the year of the trip. Cut the ship in one colour of iron-on and the lettering in another. For a simpler shirt, the ship with four decks reads well at 200 to 250 mm across the chest.

Does the cruise ship silhouette stand on a flat line?

Yes. The bottom of the hull is a straight waterline, so the ship sits level on a shelf edge, a strip of card sea or the horizon of a layered scene. It is one solid piece with nothing cut out, and its narrowest part, the radar mast, is 2.7 mm wide when the ship is 100 mm long.

Is this a particular cruise line’s ship?

No. It is a generic ship drawn for this library: four decks, one funnel and a plain hull, with no company colours, no funnel emblem and no name on the bow.
