Filling in the template
Each file is a layout with nothing written on it. The calendar page marks the date of birth, the clock the time, the scale the weight and the ruler the length, and a rule shows where each line of lettering goes. Open the file in your cutting software, type the name and the four facts in a typeface you like, and sit each one on its rule. Then either delete the rules or keep them as underlines.
Weight and length are written differently from place to place: pounds and ounces with inches, as in “7 lbs 4 oz” and “20 in”, or grams and centimetres, as in “3290 g” and “51 cm”. In letters 10 mm tall the longest of these needs about 60 mm of rule, so size the template until its rules are at least that long.
Sizes and what to make
The usual keepsakes are a round or square wooden sign 250 to 300 mm across for the nursery wall, a 200 by 250 mm frame, a cushion and a soft toy. At 250 mm the icons in the list design are 40 mm wide and no part of them is thinner than 3 mm, so they cut cleanly in vinyl. Below about 120 mm overall, the notches of the ruler and the hands of the clock get fine, so use the icon set alone and write the stats by hand.
The plaque, the elephant and the bodysuit are single pieces for plywood, acrylic or card. The others are loose pieces: cut them from one sheet of vinyl together with your lettering and lift everything with one piece of transfer tape, so the spacing stays as you set it.
How to open the files
- Cricut Design Space: choose Upload, pick the SVG, and add it to the canvas. Set the width you want; the shape is already welded.
- Silhouette Studio: Designer Edition and above open the SVG. The free Basic Edition does not, so open the DXF instead.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and Glowforge: import the SVG, then set the layer to cut, score or engrave.
- Inkscape, Illustrator and Affinity: open the SVG. It is a plain filled path, so you can recolour it, add a stroke or combine it with your own work.
- Printing or sublimation: use the PNG, which has a transparent background.
Each design page lists the file’s narrowest part at seven sizes, so you can tell whether it will survive at the size you plan to cut.
Questions
What goes on a birth stats sign?
The baby’s name, the date of birth, the time, the weight and the length. Some families add the place of birth. These templates give one line for the name and four for the facts; put a place on the name line in smaller letters if you want it.
How do I add the lettering to the elephant’s ear?
Type the name and the stats, size them to fit the ear, which is about 95 mm across and 115 mm tall when the elephant is 250 mm wide, and place them on it. In vinyl, cut the lettering in a second colour and stick it on. In wood, engrave it, or cut it out and back the elephant with card.
Can I make it before the baby arrives?
Yes, and it is the reason for a blank template. Cut the sign, the icons and the rules ahead of time, and add the name and figures in vinyl afterwards. The plaque and the round sign are the easiest to finish in a few minutes.
