Watch engraving ideas, and how many letters fit

Watch engraving ideas for a son, husband, wife, dad or graduate, sorted by who the watch is for, with the character limits three sellers publish.

Published

The back of a watch holds very little: on the engraving forms read for this guide, between 12 and 20 characters a line, and between one and five lines. So the best watch engravings are short. A name and a date, a line of three or four words, or initials and a year will fit almost any watch. A sentence will not.

Start with the limit, then choose the words. The number after each idea below is its length in characters, spaces included, so you can check it against your engraver’s form before you fall for it. A slash marks the start of a new line, and each line has its own number.

How much fits on a watch

These are the limits that two watch makers and one engraver publish on their own order forms. They are examples of what to expect, not rules for every watch.

Whose limitWhat the form allows
Shinola, a watch maker“Enter up to twelve characters on each line.” Letters and a few punctuation marks, and no emojis
Vincero, a watch makerTwo lines, each “max 20 characters, including spaces”. The form says the “text will be upper case”
Engravers Guild of London, on a watch with a 30 mm caseOne line of 12 characters
Engravers Guild of London, 33 mm caseThree lines: 16, 16 and 14 characters
Engravers Guild of London, 40 mm caseFour lines: 12, 16, 16 and 12 characters
Engravers Guild of London, 44 mm caseFive lines: 12, 16, 18, 16 and 12 characters

Three things follow from that table.

  • Spaces count. Vincero says so in as many words. “Love, Dad” is nine characters, not seven.
  • On a round back the outer lines can be shorter. On the two larger watches, the engraver allows 12 characters on the outer lines and 16 or 18 in the middle. Put a name or a year on the first and last lines and the longest words in the centre.
  • A bigger case holds more. The 30 mm watch takes 12 characters in all. The 44 mm watch takes 74.

If your watch is not from one of these sellers, the limit is whatever your engraver says it is. Ask for the number of lines and the characters on each line before you write anything, and ask whether they will send a preview. Measure the flat part of the case back too: lettering cannot run over a raised rim, a screw or the maker’s own markings.

Check before it is cut

Engraving cannot be undone. Shinola’s terms say that “Engraving is a permanent process”, and that it is the customer’s responsibility to make sure the details are right, “including spelling, typographic errors and engraving placement”. Vincero marks customised watches as “final and non-refundable”.

So type the message, then read it backwards word by word. Check the date against a calendar. If the watch is a surprise for someone whose name has an unusual spelling, check that too.

Dates, initials and places

These work on any watch, because they are short and true.

  • A date. Take 14 June 2026. It can be “14.06.2026” (10), “14 JUNE 2026” (12), “June 14, 2026” (13) or, in Roman numerals, “XIV.VI.MMXXVI” (13). A date in numbers alone is read as day then month in Britain and month then day in the United States, so write the month as a word if the watch may cross the Atlantic.
  • Two years. “1996 to 2026” (12) suits a retirement, and “Est. 2019” (9) a marriage.
  • Initials. “J.A.M.” (6) or “J + S” (5) fits the smallest back.
  • A place, as coordinates. Latitude comes first, then longitude, each with its hemisphere letter. The Golden Gate Bridge is at 37.8197° N, 122.4786° W, which engraves on two lines as “37.8197 N / 122.4786 W” (9 / 10). Four decimal places are precise to about 11 metres at the equator, which is as fine as a watch needs. Find the place on a map, copy the two numbers, and check that the first is between 0 and 90. If the two are swapped, the engraving points at somewhere else on Earth.

For a son

  • “Go well, son” (12)
  • “Your time is now” (16)
  • “My son, my pride” (16)
  • “Proud of you / always” (12 / 6)
  • “Wherever you go / we go with you” (15 / 14)
  • “21 today / Love, Dad” (8 / 9)
  • “For James / 12 June 2027 / Mum and Dad” (9 / 12 / 11)
  • “The world is wide / Come home often” (17 / 15)

On his wedding day, the date and who it is from are enough. On a first watch for a boy, his name and the year will mean more to him at forty than a motto would.

For a husband

  • “My husband, my home” (19)
  • “I’d choose you again” (20)
  • “Yours, every hour” (17)
  • “See you at the altar” (20)
  • “Today I marry / my best friend” (13 / 14)
  • “25 years / and counting” (8 / 12)
  • “Ten years in / only just begun” (12 / 15)

A watch given on the wedding morning is read before the service. Write for that moment.

For a wife

  • “My wife, my love” (16)
  • “Every hour, yours” (17)
  • “Since 2009” (10)
  • “Time well spent / with you” (15 / 8)

For a boyfriend or girlfriend

  • “Worth the wait” (14)
  • “Counting the hours” (18)
  • “Come home soon” (14)
  • “Same sky / different clocks” (8 / 16)
  • “Our first year / 2026” (14 / 4)

For a dad or a mum

  • “Best dad, no contest” (20)
  • “Thank you for / your time, Dad” (13 / 14)
  • “Dad / from your girls” (3 / 15)
  • “Mum / our constant” (3 / 12)
  • “Time for you now, Mum” (21)

For a graduate

  • “Class of 2027” (13)
  • “BSc 2027 / Well earned” (8 / 11)
  • “The hard work / was yours” (13 / 9)
  • “Dr Patel / at last” (8 / 7)

For a groom, a best man or a friend

  • “Best man, best mate” (19)
  • “Thanks for standing / with me” (19 / 7)
  • “Sisters first” (13)
  • “Friends since / Year 7” (13 / 6)

For a retirement or long service

  • “30 years / well served” (8 / 11)
  • “Thank you, Ann / 1996 to 2026” (14 / 12)
  • “Your time / is your own” (9 / 11)
  • “Off the clock” (13)

For a first communion or a christening

  • “First Holy Communion / 3 May 2026” (20 / 10)
  • “Thomas / baptised / 9 August 2026” (6 / 8 / 13)

Lines about time

A watch invites them, and the old ones are short.

EngravingLengthWhat it means or where it is from
“Tempus fugit”12Latin: time flies
“Carpe diem”10Latin, from Horace: seize the day
“Festina lente”13Latin: make haste slowly
“Psalm 90:12”11“So teach us to number our days”
“Psalm 31:15”11“My times are in thy hand”
“Eccles. 3:1”11“To every thing there is a season”
“Eccles. 3:11”12“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time”

The verses are quoted from the King James Bible, and each was checked against that text. A reference alone fits the smallest watch, and the wearer knows what it says.

A line from a song, a film or a recent book is someone else’s property, and it rarely fits in twelve characters anyway. If a song matters to you both, engrave its title, or the date you first heard it together.

Funny ones

  • “You’re late” (11)
  • “Running late again” (18)
  • “Stolen from Dad” (15)
  • “It’s later than / you think” (15 / 9)
  • “Wind me up” (10)
  • “Yes, it’s that time” (19)

Keep a joke that the wearer will still like in twenty years, and keep it clean. Shinola’s terms say “Please, no profanity”, and that it may refuse a message because of its content.

A pocket watch

A pocket watch is a thing that gets handed down, so say who it came from. None of the forms read for this guide was for a pocket watch, so ask the engraver how much the lid or the back will take, and whether the inside of the lid can be engraved.

  • “From your father / as from his” (16 / 11)
  • “Passed down / 1952 to 2026” (11 / 12)
  • “Keep it wound” (13)

A picture in place of words

Some engravers will cut a drawing. Engravers Guild of London says that for artwork it needs “a high-contrast black and white image (i.e. with no shading, grey or gradation of colour)”. At the size of a watch back, that means one simple shape: a compass, an anchor, a mountain, a heartbeat line, an infinity sign or a star sign from the zodiac set. Each of those in the free library is a solid black shape of the kind an engraver asks for. Ask first whether they take customer artwork and in what file type.

Engraving a watch yourself is a different matter. A hobby diode or CO2 laser does not mark bare steel without a marking spray, as laser engraving metal explains, and a watch is a poor thing to practise on. For a present, pay an engraver.

Questions

What do people engrave on the back of a watch? We have no survey to cite. A name, a date and who it is from are the plain choices, and on the smallest form above there is room for only one of them.

How many characters fit on a watch? On the forms read for this guide, 12 to 20 a line, and from one line to five. Your engraver’s form is the only number that counts.

Should the date be the day I give it or the day it marks? The day it marks. A wedding watch carries the wedding date, even if it is handed over the night before.

Can I have both sides engraved, or a watch I already own? Ask. Engravers Guild of London offers “one engraving per item as standard” and only engraves what it sells; for a watch you already own, it points customers to a trade engraver. Other sellers have their own rule.

Upper case or lower case? Some forms give no choice: Vincero’s text is always upper case. Where you can choose, ask for a preview of both and pick the one you can read at arm’s length.
