Engraving ideas: short quotes by who it is for
Engraving ideas and short quotes for him, her, mum, dad, a sister or a best friend, each with its length in characters, plus how much common gifts hold.
Published
Most things that get engraved hold far less than people expect: eight characters on a small disc, fifteen to thirty inside a ring, a dozen to a line on a watch. So a good engraving is nearly always short. One word, a date or a pair of initials fits most things. A line of three or four words needs a bar, a watch, a ring or something bigger.
Find out how much your object holds, then choose from the ideas below. The number after each one is its length in characters, with spaces and punctuation counted, as an engraver’s order form counts them. A slash marks the start of a new line.
How much common gifts hold
These limits are the ones sellers and engravers publish on their own order forms. They are examples: your engraver’s form is the limit that counts.
| Thing | Published limit | Whose |
|---|---|---|
| Watch | 12 to 20 characters a line, on one to five lines | Shinola, Vincero, Engravers Guild of London |
| Inside of a ring | 15 recommended, “up to 30”, or “under 50” | Manly Bands, Larson Jewelers, WeddingBands.com |
| 15 mm disc on a bracelet | 8 characters | Engravers Guild of London |
| Bar on a man’s bracelet | 15 characters | Engravers Guild of London |
| Locket, 24 mm by 16 mm | Four lines: 6, 10, 10 and 6 | Engravers Guild of London |
| Cufflinks, 19 mm by 14 mm | 9 characters on each | Engravers Guild of London |
| 14 mm disc on a keyring | Two lines of 8 | Engravers Guild of London |
| Whisky glass, 84 mm across | Five lines of 24 | Engravers Guild of London |
| Blade of a folding knife | Two lines of 14 | Buck Knives |
| Leather card holder | 4 characters | Engravers Guild of London |
A rule of thumb from that table: anything of 8 characters or fewer fits every item on it except the card holder. Anything of 12 or fewer fits the watch, the ring, the bar, the glass and the knife blade, but not the small discs, the locket or the cufflinks. A single line of more than 20 characters needs a ring with a generous limit, a glass, or something bigger.
If no limit is published, ask the engraver for one before you write, and ask to see a preview. Asking for more than the form allows is sometimes possible: Engravers Guild of London says it will “try and accommodate all engraving requests” if you contact it first, perhaps for a small charge.
Facts first: dates, initials, places
A fact is the safest thing to engrave.
- A date. For 8 November 2026: “08.11.2026” (10), “8 Nov 2026” (10) or “VIII.XI.MMXXVI” (14). Write the month as a word if the reader might be American and you are British, or the other way round, because the two countries put day and month in opposite orders.
- Initials. “R.J.T.” (6), or two sets joined: “R.T. & S.L.” (11).
- A place. Coordinates go latitude first, then longitude, with N or S and E or W. The Statue of Liberty stands at 40.6892° N, 74.0444° W, which engraves as “40.6892 N, 74.0444 W” (20). A latitude is never more than 90, so if your first number is bigger than that, the two are the wrong way round.
- A name and a year. “Thomas 2026” (11) on a christening gift says all it needs to.

A reference takes ten characters or so and stands for a whole verse. The words below are from the King James Bible and were checked against it.

In Latin
Short, old and free of copyright. Say what it means when you give the gift.
- “Dum spiro spero” (15): while I breathe, I hope
- “Nil desperandum” (15): never despair
- “Ad meliora” (10): towards better things
- “Fortes fortuna adiuvat” (22): fortune favours the brave
- “Vincit qui se vincit” (20): he conquers who conquers himself
Words that are not yours to engrave
Song lyrics, lines from films and television, and modern poems and books belong to the people who wrote them. Do not put them on anything you make to sell. For a gift there is a better reason to leave them out: they are someone else’s words. Engrave the title of the song, the date of the concert, the place you heard it, or the thing one of you actually said.
A picture in place of words
Some things have room for a drawing, and some engravers will cut one. Engravers Guild of London asks for “a high-contrast black and white image (i.e. with no shading, grey or gradation of colour)”. The shapes in the free library are of that kind: a heart, a paw print, a tree, a star sign from the zodiac set, an initial from the letter sets, or ready lettering such as best mom ever and the man, the myth, the legend.
If you have a laser of your own, a photo can become an engraving as well. Plotcaster turns it into dots or lines, and the guides to wood, glass, acrylic and coated metal say how each material takes it. Laser engraving ideas lists things to make.

Questions
What is a good short engraving? A name, a date, or a line of two to four words that the person has heard you say. Eight characters or fewer fits every item in the table above except the card holder.
Do spaces count? Yes, on every form read for this guide that says how it counts. Vincero and WeddingBands.com both say “including spaces”.
Capitals or lower case? Follow the engraver’s form. Some set everything in capitals, and some offer a script. Ask to see a preview in each.
How do I check it before it is cut? Type it out, count it, read it aloud, and have a second person check every name and number. Engraving is permanent, and sellers such as Vincero treat an engraved item as final and non-refundable.
