Pigs on the farm shadow box SVG
Pigs in the field beside the barn: a sun and a cloud, trees on the far hill, a barn and an oak, a big pig on the rise between two lengths of fence, a sow with her two piglets and a young pig in front of them, and daisies and tufts of grass at the front. 6 sheets of card, cut and stacked with a gap between each, make the picture. The files are free, and every part of the scene can be moved, swapped or resized below before you download.
6 sheets at 10 × 8 in, landscape, zipped, with a note on putting them together.

The 6 sheets
Sheet 1 is the back and sheet 6 is the front. Each one is a single piece with the same frame round its edge, so they line up when stacked. The colours shown are the “Blossom” set; cut them in any card you like. Cut sheet 4, “Big pig”, the slowest: at 1.1 mm it has the thinnest part in the scene, and sheet 6, “Grass and daisies”, fills the most of the view, 22% of it.
| Sheet | What is on it | Narrowest part | Seen from the front |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Sun and cloud | A whole sheet with holes for: Plain disc and Fluffy cloud | over 2 mm | 25% |
| 2. Far hills | Rolling ground, with: Three trees | 2 mm | 5% |
| 3. Barn | Rolling ground, with: Simple barn for children and Oak tree with a broad crown | over 2 mm | 13% |
| 4. Big pig | Rolling ground, with: 2 × Wooden fence with dog-eared boards and Pig silhouette | 1.1 mm | 21% |
| 5. Sow and piglets | Rolling ground, with: Sow and two piglets and Pig silhouette | 1.4 mm | 12% |
| 6. Grass and daisies | A gentle slope, with: 2 × Bunch of grass and Two daisies in silhouette | 1.1 mm | 22% |
Measured from the files at 10 × 8 in, landscape. The narrowest part is the thinnest neck of card that holds anything on; sharp tips are not counted. “Seen from the front” is the share of the picture that sheet fills once the sheets in front of it are in place.
Will it cut at your size?
The download is 10 × 8 in, landscape. The scene maker above makes the same scene at any of these sizes; the thinnest part scales with it.
| Frame opening | Each sheet | Narrowest part | Depth needed | Fits a 12 × 12 in mat | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 8 in, landscape | 254 × 203.2 mm | 1.1 mm | 20 mm | Yes | Cuts easily |
Depth needed allows 3 mm of foam between sheets and 5 mm for the card itself and the backing.
Making this one
The big pig is about 10 cm long at 10 by 8 inches. It is a plain silhouette with the eye, the fold of the ear and the mouth cut through and a loop in the tail: cut those small shapes first and the outline last, and take the loop of the tail slowly. The pigs themselves are bold shapes. The sheet with the sow and the young pig is about 1.4 mm at its finest, at the mouth of the young pig. The fine cutting is in the fence beside the big pig and the stems of the daisies, both at about 1.1 mm. Nothing hangs on a thread. In the Blossom colours the pigs come out in pinks, pale at the back and plum at the front; for a farm in greens, choose Forest green.
- Cut all 6 sheets from 160 to 220 gsm card at the same size.
- Lay them out in order, sheet 1 at the back.
- Put strips of 3 mm foam tape round the border of sheet 1 and press sheet 2 onto it with the edges level. Carry on to sheet 6.
- Fit the stack into a deep frame with the front sheet against the glass. For a light box, run a strip of warm white LEDs round the inside of the frame behind the stack.
The zip includes these steps as a text file, each sheet as its own SVG and all 6 side by side in one SVG. More on paper, frames and lights is on the shadow box page.

Questions
Can I cut it by hand?
Yes. There are six sheets, and the pigs, the barn and the oak are large plain shapes. The slow parts are the two lengths of fence and the daisies, which are fine cutting at about 1.1 mm. Print each sheet at full size, tape it over the card and cut through both.
Can I have the pig as a file of its own?
Yes. Every pig here is a design in the library: see the pig designs for the pig, the sow with her two piglets and a wild hog as single files.
How is this different from the other farm scenes?
Here the pigs are the subject and the barn is behind them. The Farmyard scene has a tractor, cows and a hen with her chicks, the Winter farm scene has highland cattle in the snow, and the Farmhouse and windmill scene has a farmhouse with a porch and an old truck.
Can I sell boxes I make with it?
Yes. Finished pieces are yours to sell. The files themselves may not be sold or shared; send people to this page. See the licence.
