How to convert an SVG to WebP

  1. Choose your SVG, drop it on the box, or paste SVG code.
  2. Set the width or height in pixels.
  3. Keep the background transparent or pick a colour, set the quality, and download.

Why WebP

WebP is a picture format made for websites. Like JPG it can trade a little sharpness for a much smaller file, and like PNG it can be transparent. Every current browser shows it.

If the picture will sit on a web page, though, ask first whether to convert at all. An SVG is usually smaller than any pixel version of itself and stays sharp at every size. Convert when the place it is going accepts pixels only, or when the SVG is so complex that it is slow to draw.

Browser support for saving

The WebP file is written by your browser. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can write WebP. Safari shows WebP but has not been able to write it; this page tells you if your browser cannot, and SVG to PNG works everywhere.

Questions

What quality should I use?

The default of 92 is close to indistinguishable from the original for most drawings. For flat graphics you can often go down to 75 before edges soften.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Leave the transparent background box ticked.
